    A286 Flat Bar

A286 flat bar is rectangular-cross-section A286 bar stock used for structural members, machined brackets, support frames, and applications where rectangular geometry is preferred over round or square. TorqBolt manufactures A286 flat bar to AMS 5731, AMS 5732, ASTM A453 grade 660, and ASTM B637 standards in widths 10-200 mm and thicknesses 3-50 mm. Hot-rolled or cold-drawn finishes; ±0.20-0.50 mm tolerance on width, ±0.10-0.30 mm on thickness. Heat-treated to deliver 130 ksi tensile / 95 ksi yield, retained mechanical properties at 700 °C continuous service. Distinguished from A286 plate by the elongated rectangular cross-section (length ≫ width) vs plate (width ≈ length). See parent A286 bar stock, sister variants round bar, hex bar, square bar, and the canonical chemical composition, mechanical properties.

    About A286 Flat Bar

    A286 flat bar (UNS S66286) — rectangular cross-section AMS 5731 / 5732

A286 flat bar is produced by hot-rolling A286 ingot through a flat-pass roll mill, or by cold-drawing hot-rolled bar through a flat die for tighter tolerance. The width-to-thickness ratio typically ranges from 2:1 to 10:1; aspect ratios above 10:1 transition to A286 plate classification. Used as raw stock for aerospace machined brackets, mounting plates, structural reinforcement straps, electrical bus-bar applications (where non-magnetic A286 prevents EMI in high-current bus-bar), and gas-turbine combustor support frames. Each lot is solution-treated and aged per AMS 5732, surface-pickled, and ships with EN 10204 3.1 mill cert.

    A286 Flat Bar Cross-Sections & Standards

TorqBolt produces A286 flat bar in five primary cross-section ranges:

    • Narrow flat bar (3-15 mm thickness × 10-50 mm width) — Used for thin structural straps, electrical bus-bars, mounting plates. Typical aspect ratio 3:1 to 5:1.
    • Standard flat bar (15-30 mm thickness × 25-100 mm width) — Used for aerospace structural brackets, gas-turbine combustor support frames, machined fixtures. The highest-volume A286 flat bar size range.
    • Heavy flat bar (30-50 mm thickness × 50-200 mm width) — Used for industrial structural members, nuclear reactor pressure-vessel reinforcement. Hot-rolled only — cold-drawing impractical at this thickness.
    • Cold-drawn precision (3-25 mm thickness) — Cold-drawn through a flat die for tighter tolerance (±0.10 mm thickness, ±0.20 mm width) and improved surface finish (Ra ≤ 2 µm).
    • Custom edge geometry — Standard mill-edge (rectangular) or custom radiused/chamfered edge per drawing. Aerospace applications often specify deburred or radiused edge for stress-concentration reduction.

    A286 Flat Bar Manufacturing Process

Every a286 flat bar TorqBolt ships traces back to a vacuum-induction-melted plus vacuum-arc-remelted (VIM-VAR) ingot meeting AMS 5731 / 5732 chemistry. The complete process route:

    1. VIM-VAR ingot input: AMS 5731 / 5732 chemistry. AS9100D for aerospace lots.
    2. Cogging + slabbing: Ingot broken down to slab at 1095 °C; slab thickness ≈ 2× target bar thickness.
    3. Hot rolling (flat-pass): Slab hot-rolled through flat-pass mill at 1095-1150 °C — multiple passes reduce thickness; final pass sizes width and thickness simultaneously.
    4. Pickling: Hot-rolled bar pickled in HNO₃ + HF to remove mill scale. Surface inspected per ASTM E45.
    5. Cold drawing (precision lots): For ±0.10 mm thickness tolerance: hot-rolled bar cold-drawn through a flat die at 0.5 m/min. Single or multi-pass.
    6. Solution treatment: Vacuum or atmosphere furnace 1650 °F (AMS 5732) or 1800 °F (AMS 5731). 1 h per inch.
    7. Precipitation aging: 1325 °F for 16 hours, air-cool. Hardness 29-32 HRC.
    8. Straightening + flatness: Multi-roll straightener — typical flatness ≤ 2 mm/m on length, ≤ 1 mm across width.
    9. Edge finish + cut to length: Edge-deburred, end-faced, cut to drawing length, heat-traceability labelled.

A286 Flat Bar Inspection & Certification

Each lot ships with a signed inspection certificate. Aerospace orders default to AS9100D first-article reporting per AS9102. Industrial orders default to EN 10204 type 3.1; sour-service and offshore step up to type 3.2 with third-party witness. Inspection scope:

    • Width and thickness verified by snap gauge or laser micrometer per AMS 5731 / 5732 tolerance.
    • Flatness check per ASTM A484 — typical ≤ 2 mm/m on length, ≤ 1 mm across width.
    • Edge squareness verified — 90° corner per drawing.
    • Surface inspection 100 % visual for laps, seams, mill scale per ASTM E45.
    • Hardness sample 1 per heat per ASTM E384.
    • Tensile coupon from each heat per ASTM E8.
    • Magnetic permeability < 1.005 per ASTM A342 on every aerospace heat.
    • AS9102 first-article on aerospace heats; EN 10204 3.1 commercial heats with heat-traceability label.

A286 Flat Bar Downstream Forming & Machining

Flat bar is raw stock — torque does not apply directly. Downstream cold-forming and machining: cold-bending of flat bar requires bend-radius ≥ 2 × thickness for A286 sol-treated condition, ≥ 4 × thickness for aged condition. Aged A286 has limited cold-formability — cold-bend operations should be performed in sol-treated state, then aged after forming. Aging shrinkage 0.05 % linear; design machining allowance accordingly. Aerospace structural brackets typically machined from oversize hot-rolled flat bar to maintain dimensional stability through aging.

A286 Flat Bar Applications by Industry

A286 flat bar serves rectangular-cross-section structural and electrical applications:

    • Aerospace structural brackets: Flat bar machined to mounting brackets, support fittings, attach lugs for aerospace fuel-system, hydraulic actuator, engine-accessory hardware.
    • Gas turbine combustor support frames: Hot-rolled flat bar machined to combustor liner support frames, transition-piece pivot brackets. A286 gas turbine applications.
    • Electrical bus-bar (high-temperature): Cold-drawn A286 flat bar for high-current electrical bus-bars in nuclear reactor instrumentation, electromagnetic-shielding-sensitive applications. Non-magnetic A286 prevents EMI.
    • Nuclear pressure-vessel reinforcement: ASTM A453 grade 660 flat bar for ASME III pressure-vessel structural reinforcement, control-rod-drive housing supports. A286 nuclear applications.
    • Aerospace cold-formed brackets: Cold-drawn flat bar for cold-formed aerospace brackets — bent, drilled, and finished to drawing without further machining.
    • Industrial machinery support frames: Flat bar for high-temperature furnace support frames, kiln internal hardware, refinery flare-stack reinforcement.

A286 Flat Bar — Frequently Asked Questions

What is A286 flat bar used for?

Flat bar is rectangular-cross-section A286 used for structural members, machined brackets, support frames, electrical bus-bars, and applications requiring rectangular geometry. A286 specifically serves high-temperature (425-700 °C) and non-magnetic structural applications.

What's the difference between A286 flat bar and A286 plate?

Flat bar: elongated rectangular cross-section, typical aspect ratio 2:1 to 10:1, length ≫ width. Plate: rectangular slab, typical aspect ratio < 2:1, length ≈ width. A286 plate is preferred for large-area applications; flat bar for elongated structural members.

Can A286 flat bar be cold-formed?

Yes in solution-treated condition (AMS 5731). Bend radius ≥ 2 × thickness for sol-treated; ≥ 4 × thickness for aged. Recommended sequence: cold-bend in sol-treated state → age after forming. Aged condition has limited cold-formability.

What edge geometry on A286 flat bar?

Standard mill-edge: rectangular 90° corners. Custom: radiused corners (R 0.5-2 mm) for stress-concentration reduction, chamfered edges for stack-up assembly. Aerospace specs typically deburred or radiused per drawing.

What's the lead time on hot-rolled flat bar?

Standard sizes 3-25 mm thickness: 4-6 weeks from heat release. Heavy sizes 25-50 mm thickness: 6-10 weeks. Aerospace AS9102 first-article: add 1-2 weeks.

Can A286 flat bar be supplied in coil?

Generally no — A286 flat bar is supplied in straight lengths only (3 or 6 m). For thin coiled material consider A286 sheet or strip stock instead.

    Is A286 flat bar magnetic?

No. Magnetic permeability < 1.005 verified per ASTM A342. Critical for high-current electrical bus-bar applications where adjacent magnetic material could cause EMI.

What surface finish on A286 flat bar?

Hot-rolled: pickled finish, Ra ~6-12 µm. Cold-drawn: Ra ~1-3 µm. Aerospace lots: passivated per ASTM A967 Type II.

Can A286 flat bar replace 17-4 PH flat bar?

    For service > 425 °C — yes. A286 retains 95 % of room-temperature strength at 540 °C and 70 % at 700 °C; 17-4 PH loses strength above 315 °C. For ambient-temperature applications 17-4 PH is more cost-effective. Use A286 only when temperature, magnetic, or corrosion requirements justify the cost.
