Alloy A286 Forging Process & Capabilities

TorqBolt produces Alloy A286 (UNS S66286) forgings by open-die hammer forging, ring-rolling and closed-die press-forging. Starting stock is vacuum-induction-melted plus vacuum-arc-remelted (VIM-VAR) ingot to AMS 5731 / 5732 chemistry, broken down through cogging at 1095 °C (2000 °F) and finish-forged in the 980-1090 °C window. Finishing temperature is held above the gamma-prime solvus to keep the matrix single-phase austenite during deformation; final cooling is air or oil per the AMS table.

    A286 Forging Standards Compliance

Each A286 forging is supplied with EN 10204 type 3.1 or 3.2 inspection certificate covering chemistry, tensile, hardness, micro-grain size, ultrasonic and macro-etch results. Heat treatment is per ASTM A453 grade 660 Class A (solution-treated and aged) or Class B (solution-treated only) at the customer’s option. Batch traceability is maintained from VIM-VAR heat number through forging route, machining, NDT and dispatch.

Why Choose A286 Forging Over Bar Stock

Forged grain flow follows the part contour, producing higher transverse fatigue strength than bar-machined parts. Critical aerospace and gas-turbine components, turbine wheels, compressor blisks, fuel-system fittings, exhaust mounts, require forged grain structure per AMS specifications. The forging process also closes any residual ingot porosity and refines grain size below ASTM 5, improving creep-rupture life at 650-700 °C.
