AMS 5895, A286 Sheet and Strip Aged

AMS 5895 is the SAE Aerospace Material Specification covering A286 (UNS S66286) sheet and strip in solution-treated and precipitation-aged condition. Material ships at full A286 mechanical properties (130 ksi tensile / 95 ksi yield), ready for use without further heat-treatment. Distinguished from AMS 5525 (sol-treated only) by aging condition: AMS 5895 ships aged; AMS 5525 ships sol-treated for downstream aging or forming. AMS 5895 is used as direct-use input for stamped aerospace components, electrical bus-bar applications requiring full A286 strength, and sheet-metal aerospace structural panels. See parent A286 AMS specifications hub, related A286 sheet, flat washers, sister spec AMS 5525.

When to Specify AMS 5895, A286 Sheet and Strip Aged

    • Aerospace stamped components: AMS 5895 sheet for stamped components requiring full A286 strength, aerospace structural straps, mounting brackets, sheet-metal hardware.
    • Electrical bus-bar (high-current): AMS 5895 strip / sheet for high-current electrical bus-bar in nuclear-instrumentation and electromagnetic-shielding-sensitive applications. Non-magnetic A286 prevents EMI.
    • Aged flat washer alternative: A286 flat washers blanked from AMS 5895 sheet, already aged for full strength.
    • Sol-treated alternative for forming: For cold-formable / drawable sheet, specify AMS 5525 instead, sol-treated soft condition.
    • Aerospace structural panels: AMS 5895 sheet 1-6 mm for aerospace structural reinforcement panels and mounting plates.
    • Industrial sheet alternative: ASTM B637 covers similar industrial precipitation-hardenable sheet/strip.

AMS 5895, A286 Sheet and Strip Aged, Frequently Asked Questions

    What is AMS 5895?

SAE / AMS spec covering A286 (UNS S66286) sheet and strip in solution-treated and precipitation-aged condition. Mill-aged aerospace sheet, material ships at full A286 mechanical properties, ready for use.

AMS 5895 vs AMS 5525, which to specify?

AMS 5895: sol-treated AND aged from mill, ready for use, hardness 29-32 HRC. AMS 5525: sol-treated only, soft (24-28 HRC), suitable for cold-forming. Choose AMS 5895 for direct use; AMS 5525 for forming or downstream aging.

What thickness range does AMS 5895 cover?

0.5-6 mm sheet/strip per AMS 5895. For thicker plate, specify AMS 5525 (covers up to 100 mm plate).

Can AMS 5895 sheet be cold-formed?

Limited, aged condition has reduced ductility. Bend radius ≥ 4 × thickness for aged AMS 5895 vs 2 × for sol-treated AMS 5525. For cold-forming, use AMS 5525 sol-treated then age after forming.

What's the lead time on AMS 5895 sheet?

Standard sizes 0.5-6 mm thickness × up to 1500 × 6000 mm: 8-12 weeks from heat release. Aerospace AS9102 first-article: add 1-2 weeks.

    Is AMS 5895 magnetic?

No. Magnetic permeability < 1.005 verified per ASTM A342. Critical for non-magnetic stamped components and electrical bus-bar applications.

    Can AMS 5895 be welded?

Yes, TIG / GTAW with matching A286 welding rod (AMS 5853). Aged condition requires post-weld solution-treatment + aging for weld zone strength recovery, for welded fabrications, sol-treated AMS 5525 is preferred starting condition.

What surface finish on AMS 5895?

No. 2D matte or No. 4 brushed per ASTM A480, depending on application. Aerospace lots may specify additional passivation per ASTM A967 Type II.

Is AMS 5895 NACE MR0175 compliant?

Yes, when supplied with hardness ≤ HRC 35 per NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156-3 for sour-service. Specify on PO; each heat receives Vickers traverse before release.
