AMS 5525 is the SAE Aerospace Material Specification covering A286 (UNS S66286) sheet, strip and plate in solution-treated condition. Issued by SAE International, latest revision incorporates ASTM-A638-equivalent chemistry. AMS 5525 is the dominant aerospace sheet/plate spec for combustor liner shells, exhaust diffuser panels, structural reinforcement plates, and downstream blanking input for A286 flat washers and aerospace stamped components. Distinguished from AMS 5895 (aged sheet/strip) by heat-treatment condition — AMS 5525 is sol-treated only; AMS 5895 is sol-treated + precipitation-aged. See parent A286 AMS specifications hub, related A286 plate, A286 sheet, sister spec AMS 5895, and the canonical A286 chemical composition.
AMS 5525 covers A286 sheet (≤ 6 mm), strip (≤ 1.6 mm), and plate (6-100 mm) in solution-treated condition. Material is supplied as VIM-VAR melted ingot, hot-rolled to plate thickness, hot-rolled or cold-rolled to sheet thickness, then solution-treated 1800 °F (982 °C) per the spec, oil-quenched, and pickled. Hardness 24-28 HRC after sol-treatment; bar to be aged downstream. Used as raw input for: combustor liner shell forming, exhaust diffuser panels, blank input for flat washer stamping, and aerospace structural reinforcement plates.

SAE / AMS spec covering A286 (UNS S66286) sheet, strip, and plate in solution-treated condition. The dominant aerospace sheet/plate spec for combustor liner forming, exhaust diffuser panels, and downstream stamping into flat washers and other components.
AMS 5525: sol-treated only — material is soft (24-28 HRC), suitable for cold-forming and downstream aging. AMS 5895: sol-treated AND precipitation-aged — final hardness 29-32 HRC, ready for use without further heat-treatment. Choose by required forming + aging timing.
Different scope: AMS 5525 is aerospace sheet/strip/plate; ASTM A638 grade 660 is forgings. Chemistry is identical (UNS S66286). Choose by form: AMS 5525 for sheet/plate; ASTM A638 for forgings.
Sheet ≤ 6 mm; strip ≤ 1.6 mm; plate 6-100 mm. Aerospace lots typically 1-12 mm thickness; nuclear / pressure-vessel lots may go to 100 mm.
Yes — the sol-treated soft condition (24-28 HRC) is suitable for cold-forming, hot-forming, deep drawing, and stamping. Bend radius ≥ 2 × thickness. Aging done after forming to develop full strength.
Standard sizes 0.5-12 mm thickness × up to 1500 × 6000 mm: 8-12 weeks from heat release. Larger plates 12-100 mm: 12-16 weeks. Aerospace AS9102 first-article: add 1-2 weeks.
No. Magnetic permeability < 1.005 verified per ASTM A342 on every aerospace heat. Critical for non-magnetic combustor liner forming and aerospace electromagnetic-sensitive panel applications.
Yes — TIG / GTAW with matching A286 welding rod (AMS 5853). Sol-treated condition is the preferred starting condition for welding (avoid welding aged material due to strain-age cracking risk).
Chemistry is identical to all other A286 specs (UNS S66286 reference). Heat treatment differs (sol-treated only for AMS 5525) and form/size scope differs (sheet/plate for AMS 5525 vs bar for AMS 5731-5737).
| Property | Min value (sol-treated) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tensile strength (MPa) | ≥ 670 | Sol-treated condition; aging by customer |
| Yield strength 0.2 % (MPa) | ≥ 380 | Sol-treated; rises to ≥ 655 after aging |
| Elongation (%) | ≥ 25 | In 50 mm gauge, sol-treated |
| Hardness HRC | 24-28 | Sol-treated; rises to 29-32 aged |
