AMS 5732 is the SAE Aerospace Material Specification covering A286 (UNS S66286) bar, forging, and tubing in solution-treated and precipitation-aged condition — sol 1650 °F + aged 1325 °F × 16 hours. The most common mill-aged aerospace A286 bar specification — material ships ready for use without further heat-treatment. Used directly for fastener cold-heading, aerospace machining, and downstream component manufacture. Distinguished from AMS 5731 (sol-treated only) by aging condition: AMS 5732 ships aged; AMS 5731 ships sol-treated for downstream aging. See parent A286 AMS specifications hub, related A286 round bar, hex bar, forged bar, sister spec AMS 5737 (precision aged).
AMS 5732 covers A286 bar, forging, and tubing in solution-treated and precipitation-aged condition. Material is VIM-VAR melted, hot-worked to the required form, solution-treated 1650 °F (899 °C) and oil-quenched, then precipitation-aged 1325 °F (718 °C) for 16 hours and air-cooled. Final hardness 29-32 HRC; tensile ≥ 895 MPa (130 ksi); yield ≥ 655 MPa (95 ksi). Bar tolerance per AMS 5732 dimensional table. Used directly for: cold-heading into A286 hex bolts, SHCS, NAS bolts; downstream machining of complex components; rotating shaft manufacture.

SAE / AMS spec covering A286 (UNS S66286) bar, forging, and tubing in solution-treated (1650 °F) and precipitation-aged (1325 °F × 16 h) condition. The most common mill-aged aerospace A286 bar spec — ships ready for use.
AMS 5732: sol-treated AND aged from mill, ready for use, hardness 29-32 HRC. AMS 5731: sol-treated only, soft (24-28 HRC), customer ages downstream. Choose AMS 5732 for direct use; AMS 5731 when aging timing matters.
Both sol-treated and aged. AMS 5737 has tighter heat-treatment temperature control (±5 °C) and tighter dimensional tolerance — used for precision applications and cold-headed fasteners requiring close hardness uniformity. AMS 5732 is more general aerospace spec.
1650 °F (899 °C) for 1 hour per inch of section, oil-quench. Lower than AMS 5731 (1800 °F) — AMS 5732 sol-treatment provides higher room-temperature tensile and yield at the cost of slightly lower stress-rupture strength.
29-32 HRC (277-302 HBW) after mill aging. Hardness traverse on each heat-treat batch verified per ASTM E384.
Heat-treatment is essentially identical (sol 1650 °F + aged 1325 °F). Chemistry is identical (UNS S66286). Difference is scope — AMS 5732 is aerospace bar/forging/tubing under AS9100D AQMS; ASTM A453 grade 660 Class A is industrial bolting. For aerospace, AMS 5732 cited; for industrial, ASTM A453.
Standard sizes 5-50 mm: 4-6 weeks from heat release. Larger sizes 50-200 mm: 6-10 weeks. Aerospace AS9102 first-article: add 1-2 weeks.
No. Magnetic permeability < 1.005 verified per ASTM A342 on every aerospace heat. Critical for non-magnetic instrumentation and aerospace electromagnetic-sensitive applications.
Yes — TIG / GTAW with matching A286 welding rod (AMS 5853). Pre-heat NOT required for thicknesses ≤ 50 mm. Post-weld solution-treatment + aging required for full-strength weld zone.
