    A286 Threaded Rod

A286 threaded rod (also called all-thread rod, continuous-thread rod, fully threaded studs) is A286 bar with threads rolled or cut along its full length, used as cut-to-length stud material for ASME flange bolting, suspension hangers, foundation anchor bolts, and high-temperature support hardware. TorqBolt manufactures A286 threaded rod to ASTM A453 grade 660 Class A/B/C/D (high-temperature bolting), DIN 976 (metric all-thread rod), ASME B1.1 (inch series), and ASME B1.13M (metric series) standards in sizes M3-M64 and 1/4 inch to 2-1/2 inch. Heat-treated for 130 ksi tensile / 95 ksi yield, retained mechanical properties to 700 °C continuous service. Standard lengths 1, 2, and 3 m metric / 3, 6, 12 ft inch, cut to size by customer or pre-cut to drawing. See parent A286 rods, sister variants A286 hex rod, tie rod, welding rod, related A286 stud bolts, and the canonical chemical composition, heat treatment.

    About A286 Threaded Rod

    A286 threaded rod (UNS S66286), ASTM A453 / DIN 976 full-thread continuous rod

A286 threaded rod is produced by either thread rolling (cylindrical or flat-die rolling along the full length of A286 round bar) or thread cutting (single-point or chasing tool on a CNC lathe). Rolling preserves grain flow continuity and provides 30-40 % higher fatigue strength vs cut threads, preferred for vibration-critical and aerospace applications. Cutting is used for sizes > M64 where rolling equipment capacity is exceeded. Threads conform to 6g class metric (commercial) or 4g6g class (aerospace per MIL-S-8879), and 2A class inch (commercial) or 3A class (aerospace). Each lot is solution-treated 1650 °F and aged 1325 °F per AMS 5737 / ASTM A453 Class A, surface-passivated per ASTM A967, and ships with EN 10204 3.1 mill cert. Distinguished from A286 stud bolts by length: stud bolts are pre-cut to specific drawing length; threaded rod is supplied in standard 1-3 m lengths for customer cut-to-size.

    A286 Threaded Rod Manufacturing Process

Every a286 threaded rod TorqBolt ships traces back to a vacuum-induction-melted plus vacuum-arc-remelted (VIM-VAR) ingot meeting AMS 5731 / 5732 chemistry. Process route:

    1. VIM-VAR round bar input: AMS 5731 round bar drawn to thread blank diameter ≈ 0.95 × thread nominal. Aerospace lots use vacuum-degassed bar for fatigue performance.
    2. Surface preparation: Bar pickled in HNO₃ + HF, dried, lubricated with thread-rolling soap (calcium-based).
    3. Thread rolling (sizes ≤ M48): Cylindrical or flat-die thread rolling at 30-60 m/min, rolls full thread in 1-2 die rotations along the full bar length. Class 6g metric / 2A inch (commercial) or 4g6g / 3A (aerospace).
    4. Thread cutting (sizes > M48): Single-point cutting on CNC lathe for sizes above thread-rolling capacity. Slower than rolling but produces threads on M48-M150 sizes.
    5. Solution treatment: Vacuum or atmosphere furnace 1650 °F (AMS 5737) per ASTM A453 Class A. 1 h per inch, oil-quench.
    6. Precipitation aging: 1325 °F for 16 hours, air-cool. Hardness 29-32 HRC for AMS 5737 / Class A condition.
    7. Straightening: Multi-roll straightener for ≤ 2 mm/m straightness tolerance. Critical for long lengths, bent threaded rod is unusable in field assembly.
    8. Passivation: Pickle + HNO₃ rinse + passivate per ASTM A967 Type II. Optional silver / nickel anti-galling for above-540 °C service.
    9. Cut to length + label: Rod cut to drawing length on band saw, end-faced + chamfered, heat-traceability labelled. Standard 1, 2, 3 m lengths.

A286 Threaded Rod Inspection & Certification

Each lot ships with a signed inspection certificate. Aerospace orders default to AS9100D first-article reporting per AS9102. Industrial orders default to EN 10204 type 3.1; sour-service and offshore step up to type 3.2 with third-party witness. Inspection scope:

    • 100 % thread-gauge GO/NO-GO along full rod length per ISO 1502 (commercial) or MIL-S-8879 (aerospace).
    • Straightness check per ASTM A484, typical ≤ 2 mm/m for cold-drawn threaded rod.
    • Surface inspection 100 % visual for thread laps, drawing-die scoring, edge defects.
    • Hardness sample 1 per heat per ASTM E384, 4-point Vickers on rod cross-section.
    • Tensile coupon from each heat per ASTM E8, full-thread rod tested in pull-test fixture.
    • Magnetic permeability < 1.005 per ASTM A342 on every aerospace heat.
    • Salt-spray ASTM B117 96-hour pass for passivated lots.
    • AS9102 first-article on aerospace heats per AS9100D AQMS.

A286 Threaded Rod Installation & Service Notes

Threaded rod is supplied in long lengths and cut to size by the customer or pre-cut to drawing. Once cut and assembled with nuts, the resulting stud-bolt is torqued like a regular A286 stud bolt, typical preload 75 % of yield (for grade 660 Class A: ~ 490 MPa residual stress). Above 540 °C apply nickel anti-seize per AS5272 to threads to avoid austenitic-stainless thread galling. For long-rod suspension applications, account for thermal expansion: A286 coefficient is 17.0 µm/m·°C from 20 °C to 300 °C; a 2 m rod expands ~9 mm from 20 °C to 700 °C operation. Spring-mount or slip-joint design is required to accommodate thermal expansion in long-rod installations.

A286 Threaded Rod Applications by Industry

A286 threaded rod serves cut-to-length stud and high-temperature suspension applications:

    • ASME B16.5 flange bolting (cut-to-length studs): Threaded rod cut to drawing length + nut-pair assembly = stud-bolt for petrochemical heat-exchanger, hydrogen-service refinery, gas-turbine combustor casing flange bolting.
    • Industrial gas turbine suspension: Threaded rod as combustor liner and exhaust diffuser suspension hangers, supports liner weight at 700 °C operating temperature. A286 gas turbine applications.
    • Aerospace foundation anchor: Threaded rod as engine-test-cell anchor bolts, gas-turbine foundation tie-down. Long-length all-thread permits adjustable installation depth.
    • Cryogenic LNG vessel suspension: A286 threaded rod for LNG storage vessel and hydrogen-tank internal suspension hangers. Retains 85 % toughness at -196 °C.
    • Nuclear reactor internal suspension: ASTM A453 grade 660 threaded rod for ASME III pressure-vessel internal suspension, control-rod-drive housing supports, instrumentation tube hangers. A286 nuclear applications.
    • High-temperature furnace internal hardware: Threaded rod for kiln, reformer, and process-furnace internal suspension hardware, A286 retains creep resistance at sustained 700 °C operation.

A286 Threaded Rod, Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between A286 threaded rod and A286 stud bolt?

Threaded rod: continuous-thread A286 bar supplied in standard 1-3 m lengths for customer cut-to-size. Stud bolt: pre-cut to specific drawing length per customer order. A286 stud bolts are typically used with matched-pair nuts on ASME B16.5 flange bolting; threaded rod is more general-purpose all-thread material.

What's the maximum length of A286 threaded rod?

Standard production: 3 m (10 ft) in M3-M48; 6 m (20 ft) on custom request for M16-M48. Above 6 m, custom production with end-to-end welding (TIG) or splice-coupling is required, typically used for very long suspension applications.

Are A286 threaded rod threads rolled or cut?

Rolled by default for sizes ≤ M48, provides 30-40 % higher fatigue strength than cut threads. Sizes > M48 are cut on CNC lathe due to rolling-equipment capacity. Specify 'rolled threads' on PO for fatigue-critical applications.

What thread tolerance class for A286 threaded rod?

Commercial: 6g (metric) / 2A (inch) per ISO 1502 / ASME B1.1. Aerospace: 4g6g (metric) / 3A (inch) per MIL-S-8879, required for NAS / MS / NAS aerospace fastener acceptance.

    Is A286 threaded rod magnetic?

No. Magnetic permeability < 1.005 verified per ASTM A342. Preserved through cold drawing, thread rolling, sol-treatment, and aging. Compatible with non-magnetic stud-bolt assemblies for instrumentation and aerospace electromagnetic-sensitive applications.

Can A286 threaded rod be used in cryogenic service?

Yes, A286 retains 85 % of room-temperature toughness at -196 °C. Used for LNG storage-vessel and hydrogen-tank internal suspension hangers. Confirm Charpy V-notch ≥ 27 J at service temperature for safety-critical cryogenic applications.

What's the lead time on A286 threaded rod?

Standard sizes M3-M30: 4-6 weeks from heat release. Larger sizes M36-M64: 6-10 weeks. Custom inch series 8-UN: 6-8 weeks. Aerospace AS9102 first-article: add 1-2 weeks.

Can A286 threaded rod be NACE MR0175 sour-service compliant?

Yes, when supplied with hardness ≤ HRC 35 (HV ≤ 327) per NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156-3. Specify on PO; each heat receives Vickers traverse before release for sour-service compliance.

How do I cut A286 threaded rod to length?

Use abrasive cut-off saw or chop saw with a thin abrasive disc, A286 is hard and tough; carbide-tipped circular saw teeth blunt quickly. After cutting, file or grind the cut end to remove burr; chamfer the leading edge to start the nut. For aerospace cut-to-length, machine the cut end on a lathe for clean perpendicular face.
